Koorem / Korem / Koorm Family Tree

Koorem | Korem | Koorm

Saaremaa, Estonia

This is the Koorem family tree from Estonia. The name is also spelt as Korem or Koorm which was the spelling influenced by the Russians and Germans before Estonia achieved independence in 1919.   Koorem literally means load or burden.

Johann Korem was born on 25th of May 1847 in south-east of Estonia, at the Uue-Antsla manor, Urvaste parish in Võru county.  Johann Koorem probably moved to Saaremaa when he was recruited as a soldier in the Tsarist army. Afterwards his occupations were a forest worker and cabinet maker.  He lived in Loode, Kuressaare and was married in 1872 to Anna Katarina Kruse who was born on the 14th of September 1850.

Prior to Johann his ancestors were servants/serfs working for manors in the Urvaste parish of Voru County, Estonia.

The family of Karl Adolf Koorem (the son of Johan and Anna Korem) were all born in Kuressaare, Saaremaa in Estonia. They lived on the western edge of Kuressaare in a wooded area called Loode. In the early part of the 1900s Loode was the site of a passenger harbour which was built in 1872. Boats sailed from there to the major Saaremaa harbour at Roomassaare.  The Port Artur cafe was located near the Loode harbour.

The Koorem family lived in a stone and timber house which had a thatched roof. They house was located about 30 meters south of the road leading from Kuressaare to Nasva at the eastern turn off to Loode Tammik. The children slept three to a bed.  The house is now a pile of rocks with trees growing amongst them. 10 meters to the south is the remains of the well.  During the Soviet occupation the Loode area was a military base.  Today Loode is unpopulated and is a wild life sanctuary and includes the protected Loode oak wood.

Karl met Miina while she was working as a waitress in a roadhouse in the area. They had a total of 8 children. Karl was a cabinet maker and carpenter. He died in 1929 at the age of 53 as the result of an accident. After his death Miina had to work hard to raise the family. She looked after the forest in the area. The family was torn apart as the Russians took control of Estonia in 1940. One year later the Germans took control and then in 1944 the Russians again invaded the country. In 1944 Paul Koorem escaped to Sweden. In the same year Erika Koorem also left home and ended up living in Scotland via Germany and England.

Karl Koorem’s brother August Bernhard Koorem (Ben) had a bakery in Kuressaare. His bakery is still renowned amongst some of the older citizens of Kuressaare. Karl and Miina’s eldest son Bernard Koorem trained and was employed as a baker in his shop before moving to live in Tallinn.

ANCESTORS (1700’s -1847)

These places mentioned at the time would be located in Livonia.  Livonia was originally made up of Finnish tribes – but over the years occupied by different groups Germany, Russia, Poland and Sweden.  All these influenced the naming convention. Hinto is a personalized forename of Heinrich.  Sometimes nicknames were  included in the full name.  And of course spellings changed too….
